Oslo, Good Food!
This is ‘Sweet Rice Muesli’, one of Oksana’s good recipes.
Oksana is my CS Host in Oslo, capital of Norway. Oksana is a girl from Ukraine and just transferred to Oslo by her company recently. She has got a job but hasn’t got her working visa yet when I meet her. She is in a poor condition because she doesn’t have any salary yet. I was determined to use the least money to travel in Europe so we are both in a poor situation. It give us a good reason to go to the market and cook at home every day.
‘Sweet Rice Muesli’ is one of Oksana recipes. The cooking method is just like cooking rice but using milk instead of water and add sugar for the last step. It is a traditional breakfast in Ukraine.
My concept of rice turns totally upside-down by this ‘Sweet Rice Muesli’. Rice is a main meal and serve with salty or spicy dishes (at most sweet-sour dishes) in my past experience. I have never tasted rice sweet like dessert. The starch in the rice actually has a little sweet if tasted carefully. Ukrainians put a great emphasises on the starch sweetness and add milk and sugar in it to make a honey-sweet ‘Sweet Rice Muesli’(and I add banana too :)
Sweet Rice Muesli has brought me a sweet surprise and crashing my usual expectation. The funniest thing is that I am in Norway but mostly inspired by Ukrainian culture. Traveling is really a journey expect the unexpected!
Dinner cooked by Oksana. The brownish rice is a common food around Russia.
