務農 farm work
Thessy說我們今天要摘菜 Thessy said we have to pick the veges today.
我在盧森堡待了兩周，在一個鄉間小農場wwoof，wwoof的全名是World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms，每周在農田工作六日，食宿全免。
I was wwoofing in Luxembourg for 2 weeks in a country farm. The full name of WWOOF is ‘World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms’. I have to work 6 days on farm in a week with free accommodation.
My farm master is Thessy. Thessy had 2 houses. She and her family lived in a house and the wwoofers and ‘grandma’(I had never met this person) lived in another house. I have an Italian couple as wwoofers company.
Picking veges (Green Cabbage, Black Cabbage, Broccoli)
Removing the brackets
Digging potatoes was the hardest job. I really wanted to kill myself but digging potatoes.
Thessy would use the excavator to roll over the potatoes then we have to dig the potatoes out by hands. We had to kneel down on the field and digging with bare hands. We had to pull away the heavy soil and pull out potatoes.
Potatoes selling in supermarkets already be selected and they were always pretty as ‘one piece of potatoes’. The potatoes in field were not like that. Some potatoes were like grape, like join-bodies, like a heart, like a Mickey Mouse…etc. We had to sort out the ‘ugly’ potatoes in the warehouse and only the ‘normal’ looking potatoes would be sold on markets. The ‘ugly’ potatoes would be eaten by wwoofers or straight to compost.
Farmers didn’t like the ‘ugly’ potatoes (because they can’t sell) but I think ‘ugly’ potatoes were cute. They were grape potatoes, heart potatoes, Mickey Mouse potatoes if you had some imagination. Potatoes were just like human. There were so many human on Earth and absolute unite were not possible. Human are beautiful because we are all different.
I was work injury in Luxembourg.
My toe flesh which attached to the nail turn black and it hurt if it was touched. I didn’t know why it was hurt. I told Thessy that my toe hurt and wanted to see a doctor but she didn’t approve. She said she wouldn’t pay for the doctor and she gave me a little bottle with brown liquid and said it was my medicine.
I put the brown-liquid-medicine on for a few days but I still feel painful. I asked Thessy to take me to the clinic again and guarantee I would pay for the doctor with my own money. She finally (quite unwillingly) drove me to the clinic.
The clinic was under re-construction. The ‘clinic’ was modified from a couple of empty container. I registered myself and waited for around 30 minutes then the doctor diagnosed me. The doctor was a handsome guy (Yeah!)who can speak English.
The handsome doctor told me that my toenail grew inwards and there was pressure from working-boot because I wore them for long hours every day. My flesh got blackens because the boot pressed my nail then my flesh.
The handsome doctor was quick. He took a pair of scissors and cut away a small part of my nail. He was so quick that I didn’t even have enough time to scream for pain. My pain was gone by now but I had to wait patiently for the nail to grow back.
Thessy thought I was overdo and fussing. She thought I didn’t need to see a doctor as long as I can work on her farm. I knew the pain was real and I couldn’t neglect it. Why should I have to disregard my own pain because of one person? Traveling is about exploring the world and BE HAPPY but being USED by anyone. I knew my body well and wwoofers’ bodies were NOT working-machines for any farm masters. And wwoofers must stand firm for our rights and absolutely have every right to go to the clinic!
